Singapore Visit
Dec 12 2009
HH Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji arrived in Singapore on Friday 11th December 2009. The next day was Ekadasi. He gave two discourses – One at Sri Perumal Temple, Serangoon Road in the afternoon and the other at Sri Rama temple at Changi in the evening. Topic for the afternoon lecture was – ‘Essence of Bhagavad-Gita for use in everyday life.’ The evening lecture – ‘Bharatha and Karna – Virtues and Human values they portray’.
Afternoon Lecture:
The significance and meaning of Ekadasi and Upavasa were explained. Complete upvasa is not prescribed in the scriptures. Upa= near. Vasa= to be with God. God is always ready to respond but we should make a regular practice to be with him. Sincerity of approach is important. Keeping awake through the night or Jagarana on Shivarathri is based on the same principle.Introduction to Bhagavatha; discussions between King Parikshat and Sage Shuka were explained. The Bhagavatha story was recited to the King before his end came.
Arjuna’s despondency and dilemma were cleared by Krishna’s teaching through the Bhagavad-Gita. Arjuna was a very able warrior as long as Krishna was alive and supported him with his blessings. He became totally helpless after the disappearance of Krishna.
Gnyana and Agnyana were compared with reference to light and darkness. Darkness may be permanent in the cave for many years but by the light of a matchstick darkness disappears immediately. Similarly the ignorance is ceased in Man by the teachings of a Guru.
Sathya and Dharma should be followed incessantly and Moksha is attained as a consequence.
Meaning of Ahishekam, Pooja and Naivedya were explained. Partaking of Prasada with the help of three fingers is the best method especially on Ekadasi Day.
Work without aspiring for merit is important. The result is always dispensed by God. An example of a cashier in the bank was given, who counts thousands of dollars everyday. It is part of his duty and he should not develop any ownership even for a single note in the bundle.
Nature will not allow you to be indolent or idle. Influence of Panchabhuthas in the functioning of the human body was explained. Man is different from other beings, perhaps by about 10%, because of his thinking power and discrimination. Constant attempts are made to gain over nature. But man is the servant of his own body. He has to meet the demands and dictations of the body including hunger, thirst and other desires.
Differences between human body and soul were also explained.
Death is natural and could be easy but not suicide. Even committing suicide needs courage and determination. There is no beneficial reason from suicide either before or after death. An example of a feeble minded boy was given.
Each of the above realities or subtopics was substantiated by referring to appropriate slokas in the Bhagavad-Gita. Arjuna was the spiritual seeker.
The ultimate guide of solutions to solve human problems, that are beyond the human capabilities are the Vedas, the storehouse of spiritual knowledge. The Bhagavad-Gita is a condensed and filtered text of the Vedas.
The lecture lasted of 1 hour and 25 minutes followed by question and answers. This lecture program was sponsored by the Hindu Endowments Board, Singapore.
Evening Lecture:
The topic of Bharatha and Karna was dealt with. The topic was suggested by the Temple hosts. At the beginning of the lecture Swamiji recalled his earlier visit to the temple where he camped there overnight breaking the journey to Australia. The physical improvements made for the temple and the invitation of the temple management were appreciated and praised.
The newly established large statue of Hanuman in the temple attracted Swamiji’s attention. The prowess, glory and service of Hanuman was well elaborated. As a result of his dedication and selfless service Hanuman merged with Rama. He was the first one to be accessed when Rama decided to take all the beings of Ayodhya – plants and animals included – when Rama retired and reached heaven.
Early history of Rama’s dynasty and Dasharatha’s efforts of performing and completing the yagnya was explained. Kaikeyi’s son was Bharatha and the sage Vasishta named all the four children. Bharatha was incarnation of Bhakthi, ‘Bharatho Bhakthi Bharthaha’.
After Seetha’s Swayamvara Bharatha got married to Mandavi, cousin sister of Seetha, daughter of Khushadwaja, brother of Janaka. After marriage Bharatha left to his uncles’ house where he was sent word to return to Ayodhya after Rama left for his exile to the forests.
After returning to Ayodhya, Bharatha became sad to learn about Rama’s departure. His attempt to kin his own mother was abstained by his moral conviction that Rama would accuse him of the guilt; with progress of events he was not successful to bring Rama back to Ayodhya. Instead he accepted Rama’s footwear – Paduka- as the parting gift from Rama and installed the same on the throne. In the name and blessings of Paduka he ruled the Kingdom – Paduka Rajya for 14 years. His devotion to Rama was always positive and complete.
Karna – of Mahabharata was a great archer, equally good or better than Arjuna. Karna was made to suffer because of his unknown or mistaken parenthood. Duryodhana installed him as a ruler of the province and encouraged him to be with him. Karna’s loyalty and friendship to Dhuryodhana was of the highest order. His life was full of nobility and did not agree to change side even after his real identity was revealed. Karna was most charitable person and his over generosity brought him his end, ‘Dhana Veera Shura Karna’.
Both the lectures were very well attended and the participants were spiritually benefitted. Professor and Mrs. Chowdari were the local hosts in Singapore who greatly helped to organize the lectures.
The troupe returned back to Singapore on the 15th of December 2010. After another discourse at the residence of Dr. Chowdari on the 16th evening, Swamiji and party left Singapore to India on the same night.
