Sri Valmiki Ramayana As It is - 34

Balakanda39, Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha!

The region between the Himalaya Mountains and Vindhya Range is called 'Aryavartam’ and this place is considered very sacred and auspicious to perform Vedic rituals. King Sagara decided to perform a Yagna there. To escort and protect the ritual-horse, Amsumanta was appointed. Indra came in the form of a Rakshasa and stole the ritual-horse thus hindering the continuation of the ritual. The Upadhyayas told Sagara "The ritual-horse must be recovered; it will be very ill-fated if the ritual is hindered and the horse is not recovered. Don't let the yajna be ruined and you must see the completion of this." Sagara sent Sumathis' six thousand sons to look for the horse. He said to them, "Sons, search every single yard on the earth encompassed by the oceans. If you don't find the horse on earth, dig to the nether world and search there. I'll stay in the Yaga deeksha (abstinence) till you come back with the horse." The mighty princes took the orders from their father and looked all over the earth for the horse. Since they couldn't find it they split the earth with their nails that are sharper and stronger than diamonds. They also started digging with tridents and ploughs. The Rakshasas and their elephants were dying under the attack of the princes. Thus, the princes dug around the jambu dweepam (Indian continent) and were searching for the horse.

Gandharvas, asuras, naagaas and Devathas were scared and approached Brahma and said to him, "Swami! Sagara's sons are digging the whole earth. All the beings living beneath the earth are getting killed. They are killing everyone they are suspecting of stealing the horse."
