Balakanda39,
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha!
The region between the Himalaya Mountains and Vindhya Range is called 'Aryavartam’
and this place is considered very sacred and auspicious to perform Vedic
rituals. King Sagara decided to perform a Yagna there. To escort and
protect the ritual-horse, Amsumanta was appointed. Indra came in the form
of a Rakshasa and stole the ritual-horse thus hindering the continuation
of the ritual. The Upadhyayas told Sagara "The ritual-horse must be
recovered; it will be very ill-fated if the ritual is hindered and the
horse is not recovered. Don't let the yajna be ruined and you must see the
completion of this." Sagara sent Sumathis' six thousand sons to look
for the horse. He said to them, "Sons, search every single yard on
the earth encompassed by the oceans. If you don't find the horse on earth,
dig to the nether world and search there. I'll stay in the Yaga deeksha
(abstinence) till you come back with the horse." The mighty princes
took the orders from their father and looked all over the earth for the
horse. Since they couldn't find it they split the earth with their nails
that are sharper and stronger than diamonds. They also started digging
with tridents and ploughs. The Rakshasas and their elephants were dying
under the attack of the princes. Thus, the princes dug around the jambu
dweepam (Indian continent) and were searching for the horse.
